Noisy Neighbours are very common and unfortunately, that has affected a lot of people in fact statistics show that about 17.9% of the European population is suffering from the noise coming from neighbors or the streets, so it is a common issue that people deal with every day.

Luckily there are  Noise regulation measures that are in place to restrict the noise levels and protect people from loud neighbors.

How Late Can you Play Music Loud?

The short answer to how late can you play music loud is between 7 am to 11 pm, Now this will vary from country to country due to different Restrictions, Noise Regulation Policies, and Governing Laws, However, if you are in the United state of America or in the UK.

In most cases, this time interval is being used universally and in most countries, of cause with the exception of only a few countries in the world where noise levels are not regulated or restricted.

How Loud is Too Loud?

Now the next thing you may want to is how much volume is too loud to play music. Now, this is a bit complicated due to how people perceive sound waves which makes it a subject thing based on each individual.

However, A General rule is anything over 70-80 Decibels is not really loud since you can hear the person next to you when having a conversation but anything over 100 Dbs is considered to be too loud.

This is really subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Effects of Playing Music Loud

We all love music because it entertains, informs and helps us to relax and focus, however, the problem comes when playing it at a full blast which has a negative impact not only on you but your neighbors as well, some of the well-known impacts include:

  • Can Damage your eardrums which may result in hearing loss (If the volume is always at full blast and played continuously every day)
  • A conflict may occur between you and your neighbors whether it is you making the noise or your neighbors playing music too loud may cause conflict
  • Research has shown that consistent loud sound waves can lead to stress and an increase in cortisol.

What Time Can You Start Complaining?

This will greatly depend on your location, however, in most places, loud music is prohibited between 11 pm and 7 am weekdays and 12 am until 9 am, it is very important that you check with your local noise restriction because they may be different from other places.

What to Do When Your Neighbor is Playing Loud Music Late?

Should it happen that your neighbor is playing loud music late, there are things you can do to combat that, some of the things you can do includes:

1. Politely Confront Your Neighbor

The first step you can take would be to have a conversation with your loud neighbor regarding how loud they play their music and politely ask them to lower their volume, Sometimes this may be the only step that you take since some people are unaware of how far the sound travel by making them aware, the issue can be resolved quickly.

You can also make mutual agreements like agreeing to times when your neighbor can play music at full blast, for instance when you are at work and when everyone is not around.

If the neighbor is difficult then follow the next steps.

2. Call the Police

If your neighbor is being difficult and doesn’t want to cooperate with you then the next step you can take is to involve the police, since you find it hard to relax and have a quiet peaceful time in your home due to difficult people, calling the police will definitely help you.

3. Soundproof your House

One of the most effective things you can do but that comes with a few costs since soundproofing costs money it is important to ensure you have the budget if you want to go this route.

Soundproofing your home is not so hard and in most cases, you won’t need an expert to help you, however, this depends on the type soundproofing you want, In this case, I am referring to lowering the noise, professional soundproofing which is a bit costly and complicated.

Here are some of the things you can do to soundproof your house.

  1. Buy Noise Reduction Curtains (These are simply Thick curtains used to soundproof windows).
  2. Add another layer of Drywall using Green Glue ( See the full guide here).
  3. Use Acoustic foam panels to sound dampen the walls and floors.
  4. Get a soundproof door sweep and weatherstrips to close off the gaps.
  5. Buy Sound-absorbing Indoor Plants.
  6. Install noise-reducing mats to sound dampen the floor.

4. Report the Neighbor to Your Local Council

If you didn’t want to include the cops but want action to be taken then the best bet would be to talk to your local counselor and explain your problem precisely and clearly list the alternatives and the actions you took before you spoke to him/her.

5. Play Sound Masking soothing sounds

I recently listed the benefits of white noise in my previous article about the best white noise machines for offices. White noise is great because not only it’s good for your health but it also will combat the external noises and help you relax. So if you are looking for a quick solution then getting a white noise sound machine will help greatly.

6. Get an Ear Protection

Another thing you can do is to invest in ear protection like earmuffs, earplugs or any ear protection to help you lower the sounds, especially when trying to sleep. you can at least not be bothered by external noises coming from your neighbor.
