As expected sound-insulating, your garage door will require some materials and tools. If you already have some of the necessary materials you can skip to the step by step tutorial.

For safety equipment, you don’t need a lot of things you only need the essentials which are:
- Safety Glasses.
- Gloves.
Step by step Tutorial:
Step 1: Measure the Garage Door.
Take a Tape measure and start measuring the length of the vertical garage door rails.
This is an important step so I recommend you take your time when you measure the vertical distance from the left to the right.
Step 2: Cut the Insulation Board.
after measuring the vertical length of your garage door. It is time to cut the soundproofing insulation board, to do this:
- Take a pencil and mark the required length
- Then use a razor or a sharp knife to cut the board into the right length.
Note: it is important to cut the insulation board accurately so I recommend, you take your time in this step, This will drastically save you time and money since there will be no size issues.
Step 3: Insert the board
After carefully cutting the insulating board, it is time to place the cut board into the top edge of the garage door with the laminate side facing outwards.
2. Soundproof the Garage Windows
Windows are one of those things you don’t want to miss when trying to soundproof a place since sound waves can go through the window gaps, this will make the whole garage soundproofing project a failure if you miss the windows.
Fortunately, without much effort, you can quickly sound dampen them by doing the following:
1. Hang Sound Deadening Curtains
By just hanging thick curtains on the garage windows would make a huge difference but we want to take it a step further by hanging specialized kinds of curtains that are great at sound deflecting, sound deadening curtains will help with noise reduction plus they will also help insulate the area in winter.
2. Weatherstripping Hack
Now, soundproof curtains are great but if you want to drastically sound dampen the garage windows then you want to close off the gaps that you normally see in the windows.
fortunately, this takes less effort and very easy to do, all you have to do is use weatherstrips which are self-adhesive and seal the gaps, you can find weatherstrips at your local store or you can get it online.
3. Make use of Acoustic Panels on Your Ceiling
Now, soundproofing the ceiling in your garage can be quiet tricky, but the hope is not all lost, there are certain “easier” things you can do to your ceiling that will result in noticeable difference like sticking acoustic foam panels to help sound dampen the ceiling.
The reason why Acoustic foam panels work so well is the fact that they are really affordable, easy to install ( all you have to do is stick them on your garage ceiling) and they help reduce echoes and reverbs which will be beneficial especially if you will be using the garage as a studio for your band.
4. Soundproof the Garage Walls
soundproofing the walls is crucial since low-frequency sounds can easily go through the walls, it is important that you have the walls in your garage soundproofed, there are a few ways you can tackle this including:
1. Hanging Thick Moving Blankets
Moving blankets do a lot of wonders, and absorbing sounds is one of them by simply hanging moving blankets on your walls can help sound dampen the space. if you don’t have moving blankets, any thick blankets will do the work.
2. Use Mass-Loaded Vynil
MLV is another great alternative to hanging blankets on the walls since that is not really attractive by any means, you can make use of the mass loaded vinyl to cover the walls and add mass to them and as a result, the garage walls will be more soundproofed.
3. Green Glue and Drywall Combo
This is probably the most effective but as you would imagine it also takes more effort, adding drywall to your walls using green glue as a noise reduction sealant will work wonders but as I mentioned this takes more effort and money.
There are a lot of resources online on how to add drywall using green glue as a sealant, so if you are interested in this approach, there are step by step guides.
4. Foam Panels
You often see these in studios because foam panels help control the acoustics in a room, by simply adding these to your garage walls you will drastically reduce reverbs, echoes and they help with the overall soundproofing.
5. Include Bass Traps
Now, if you are going to be using your garage for your band getting bass traps is essential, because when playing bass and drums low-frequency sound waves will travel through your walls, and adding bass traps will help combat that, bass traps are great because of how much bass they can absorb.
5. Add Thick Carpets on the Floor
By simply adding a thick carpet on the floor of your garage will help soundproof the floor from all the noisy footsteps and prevent the sound waves from bouncing which helps eliminate echoes.
