Acoustic Membranes: The Definitive Guide

Written by Daniel

If you are looking for a way to soundproof your home or office, then acoustic membrane may be the material that you’re looking for. An acoustic membrane is a soundproofing material that can be used in a variety of applications.

It is made up of an absorbent material sandwiched between two thin sheets of plastic. This makes it a versatile and affordable option for soundproofing rooms. However, there are some pros and cons to consider before making a decision about whether or not to use an acoustic membrane.

What is an acoustic membrane?

An acoustic membrane is a type of material that is designed to absorb sound. It is often used in construction, to improve the acoustics of a room. There are a variety of different types of acoustic membranes, which are made from different materials and have different textures.

The most common type of acoustic membrane is made from glass wool, which is a fibrous material that can trap sound waves. Other types of acoustic membranes include those made from cross-linked polyethene, polyurethane foam, and vinyl chloride.

Acoustic membranes are often used in conjunction with other sound-absorbing materials, such as insulation, to create a more effective sound barrier.

There are many different types of acoustic membranes on the market, some considerably heavier and more powerful than others. These will be graded by various dB reduction levels across a range of Hz frequencies and come in a variety of widths. Because the thicknesses and weights of these materials affect their use and success, it’s critical to pick wisely.

How can acoustic membranes be used to soundproof different types of rooms?

The acoustic membrane can be used in both new construction and retrofit applications. It is often used in offices, schools, hospitals, and other commercial buildings where noise control is important. In addition to being an effective sound barrier, the acoustic membrane also has good fire resistance and thermal insulation properties.

The acoustic membrane has a very low depth so will best be used in situations where there is not much room to play with. There are several types of acoustic membranes on the market, some of which are better than others.

The most advanced material in this category is the Acoustiblok Isolation Membrane, which is the thinnest and highest-performing substance available by mm. It is also considerably lighter and converts sound energy into more manageable heat energy and movement through itself.

Interestingly, it works better than a sheet of lead at blocking sound transmission and is ideal for sound insulation. It’s constructed of polymers and is therefore highly flexible, adaptable, and simple to install.

Without increasing the thickness of walls or ceilings or adding excessive weight as iron sheets do, it provides effective acoustic insulation.

What are the pros and cons of using acoustic membranes?

There are both pros and cons to consider before using an acoustic membrane. Some of the pros include:

  • It is an effective sound barrier
  • Its low depth
  • It has good fire-resistant properties
  • It has good thermal insulation properties
  • It is a versatile material that can be used in a variety of applications
  • Lightweight and durable
  • Ideal for use on ceilings and walls
  • Suitable for new builds and conversions of homes
  • Blocks out airborne sound better than lead

Some of the cons to consider include:

  • It is not as effective at blocking low-frequency sounds
  • It can be expensive
  • It is not always easy to install

If you are considering using an acoustic membrane, it is important to weigh the pros and cons to decide if it is the right soundproofing material for your needs.

Is acoustic membrane the right choice for you?

If you are looking for an effective sound barrier, the acoustic membrane may be the right choice for you. Installation

The acoustic membrane should be sandwiched between plasterboard sheets using some adhesive spray for optimum results. We recommend stapling another layer over the underside of joists before incorporating acoustic plasterboard sheets, which gives the best performance but isn’t quite as good as the complete resilient bar system.

Ceiling Installation

Before screwing the resilient bars across the underside of the joists, fill in the cavity space between the joists with 100mm of acoustic mineral wool.

The first layer of 12.5mm acoustic plasterboard is then attached to the bars and the second layer of plasterboard is applied using aerosol contact adhesive and screwed on top, ensuring that the screws go through and into the resilient bars without piercing the joists.

Adhere the membrane to the plasterboard at any seams before fixing it to the ceiling- this will be much easier than trying to glue it directly onto the ceiling.

Wall Installation

The best way to use an acoustic membrane is by sandwiching it between two layers of Acoustic Plasterboard on stud walls, which will produce optimal results. If you’re going to upgrade a separating party wall with the product, we suggest installing the stud 25mm away from the existing wall, using 75x50mm as the most suitable size.

After that, infill 100mm of AMW100 Acoustic Mineral Wool and screw Resilient Bars across the stud before proceeding with the rest of the installation similar to the instructions for ceilings above.
